Anthropic vs. The Pentagon: The AI Company Won Round One

Victoria2 min read

The AI legal battle just produced its first verdict — and the government lost.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth declared Anthropic a "supply chain risk" — a designation previously reserved for foreign adversaries and terrorist-linked organizations. Every defense contractor in America would need to certify they had cut all commercial ties with the company. Trump backed it up on Truth Social, ordering federal agencies to immediately cease all use of its technology.

The underlying dispute: Anthropic refused to let Claude be deployed in autonomous weapons or domestic mass surveillance. The Pentagon wanted unfettered access for "all lawful purposes." When Anthropic held its position publicly, Washington declared war on it.

Judge Rita Lin was unimpressed. In a 43-page ruling she granted Anthropic a preliminary injunction, finding that "nothing in the governing statute supports the Orwellian notion that an American company may be branded a potential adversary and saboteur of the U.S. for expressing disagreement with the government." The measures appeared designed not to protect national security but to punish a company for speaking publicly.

The Pentagon called the ruling a "disgrace." The fight continues on a second front in DC, where a separate designation remains in effect and unresolved. Anthropic won the injunction.
